41' GOAL! Japan 0-1 Chile (Pulgar)

Pulgar is up highest to power a header into the top-left corner from the right-wing corner. Aranguiz won the set-piece and then took it, tempting Osako a couple of yards from his line but picking out Pulgar wonderfully.

54' GOAL! Japan 0-2 Chile (Vargas)

Vargas makes it two! It's a glorious Chile move. Vidal flicks to Aranguiz and the ball moves through Vargas to Isla, back to Vargas. A low strike deflects off Tomiyasu and deceives Osako.

69' Another chance for Japan!

How has Ayase Ueda not scored today?! Kubo carries the ball forward and slips in Abe, whose low cross looks destined to be turned into the net. But Ueda cannot reach the ball. Chile are still 2-0 up. Somehow.

82' GOAL! Japan 0-3 Chile (Sanchez)

That will be that! Sanchez makes it 3-0! The striker stoops to head into the top-left corner and clinch victory for Chile. Aranguiz does brilliantly to hold off a challenge in the area and dig out a cross for Sanchez, who was quickest off the mark.

83' GOAL! Japan 0-4 Chile (Vargas)

Oh, this is so harsh on Japan! It's four! Vargas darts in behind and, with Osako dashing off his line, lifts a lovely lob into the open goal. That's his second. So easy.

Match Report

Chile's bid for a third straight Copa America title started with a 4-0 win over guests Japan in Sao Paulo on Monday.

Eduardo Vargas scored a second-half brace to go with goals from Erick Pulgar and Alexis Sanchez as the two-time defending champions claimed a comfortable win in Group C.

Japan, who have taken a youthful squad to the tournament, had their chances but lacked a cutting edge.
