Liverpool fans took to Twitter with high praise for Steven Gerrard's dazzling performance in Saturday's Liverpool Legends match against Celtic at Anfield, with more than a few wondering if he could play a role in saving the club this season.

The veteran England international put the Reds ahead scoring a penalty in the charity clash in the 37th minute, and rolled back the years with competent and comprehensive midfield display.

The team beat Celtic 2-0 after Mark Gonzales doubled their lead in the second half.

With Liverpool's hope of European competition this season in flux after an inconsistent season, many on Twitter laughingly called for Gerrard to step back into Jurgen Klopp's side.

One user, responding to a post on Liverpool's official Twitter citing Gerrard's ability to pass from 40 yards wondered jokingly: 'Can he? In that case get him registered and in the PL squad. Comes to something when Steven Gerrard is the best midfielder to play for Liverpool this season.'

Another noted that: 'Steven Gerrard still has it in him.'

A third added: 'Can’t be only me who thinks Gerrard can do a job for us in midfield this season'.

The Reds midfield showing this season has often given fans pause, with the Merseyside club desperately due a rebuild in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Another user added: 'I’ve just seen Steven Gerrard score a goal at Anfield. My life is complete.'

During his storied playing career, Gerrard scored 186 times in 710 appearances for Liverpool, and enshrined his talismanic status as veritable one club man.

A brief year at LA Galaxy during the 2015/16 season capped a 17-year career spent playing in his home city.

The former club captain won two FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League, a UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super League Cup in a red jersey.

Watching him in Saturday's match, one Twitter user gushed: 'Steven Gerrard is special...'.

Gerrard will have gained more plaudits from Liverpool fans during the match when he playfully mocked the visiting supporters after a Reds freekick.

The match between the two clubs will see one-hundred per cent of its proceeds go to the LFC Foundation's and partner charities' programmes, which support schools, inclusive sports, social action, health and wellbeing, and ending food poverty.

Lining up alongside the former player, who has since branched in management of clubs such as Aston Villa and Celtic rivals Rangers, are Liverpool icons of yesterday including Martin Skrtel, Gary McAllister, Steve McManaman, and Djibril Cisse.

Robbie Keane, who turned out for both clubs, spent the first half playing for Celtic before trading his white-and-green-hooped shirt for a red one.
