Premier League giants Liverpool were said to be keen on signing a midfielder from Serie A this summer.
The Reds were linked to Napoli midfielder Eljif Elmas, but decided against a move.
Per Corriere dello Sport, he was one of the names on manager Jurgen Klopp's list for his midfield revamp.
The Reds eventually signed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.
Liverpool had been prepared to offer up to €30 million to sign Elmas from Napoli.
However, the Serie A champions were not too keen on a sale, which led to a switch in targets for the Reds.
