PSG will miss out on the Coupe de France for a second year in a row after falling to OM at the Stade Vélodrome (Orange Vélodrome). While the match was highly entertaining from a neutral standpoint PSG supporters may see some signs of trouble.
If the fans did not see an issue, Marquinhos was vocal enough about his feelings about how things unfolded in Marseille stating, “We knew they would do a lot of pressing, we didn’t manage to skip their lines any faster. We made a few mistakes that cost us dearly. We shouldn’t add to it, we know what we need to improve. It’s a defeat that hurts because it’s a Cup match against our great rival. We wanted to come back to Paris with victory and qualification. We have to do better, keep working and go forward.”
As good as PSG have been in the Champions League and Ligue 1 they have not been unbeatable. Kylian Mbappé has also been a focal point of their success with game-winning goals and assists all season. Now sidelined with injury the capital city club does not seem to have the same attacking power that they had with him on the field. That absence allows clubs like OM to press higher up the field and cause issues amongst PSG’s backline.
The Brazilian defender spoke about the missed opportunity stating, “We missed things, it’s time to shut our mouths. We know we have to improve a lot if we want to do good things this season. A lost title shot, it hurts. We’re disgusted.”
PSG are currently first in Ligue 1, but faces a very difficult February. Not only do they play Monaco, Lille, and Marseille again, but Bayern in the Champions League three days after Monaco on February 14th.
