In 2003, aged 16, Mertens was released by the youth setup at Anderlecht with coaches finding him to be too be too short and physically incapable of competing at a professional level... In 2013, Mertens signed for Napoli for a €9.6 million fee and has since made over 200 appearances for the club. He's now the club's second-highest scorer of all time!
