Milik joins Olympique Marseille

Arkadiusz Milik has finally completed his transfer to Olympique Marseille, on loan with what is effectively an obligation to buy from Napoli.

He flew out to France today and already passed his medical before this evening’s announcement.

It’s reported Marseille will pay €8-9m plus a further €3-4m in bonuses, with Napoli getting a 20 per cent cut of any future move.

Milik’s contract with Napoli was due to expire in June 2021 and he was frozen out for the last six months for refusing to sign a new deal.

This move was also in doubt until yesterday, when Napoli agreed to drop legal action against the Poland international over the 2019 ‘mutiny’ within the squad.

Before making the move, he had to sign a new contract with Napoli to June 2022, but it is purely a piece of paper, as Marseille are signing him on loan with option to buy.

That option should become an obligation after Marseille pick up their first point – so really, it’s an obligation to buy - and he has chosen to wear the Number 19 shirt.

Milik turns 27 next month and Napoli signed him from Ajax in 2016 for €32m.

His career was derailed by two serious knee injuries, still scoring 48 goals in 122 games for the Partenopei.
