Nurnberg vs Arsenal highlights: Saka stunner, chaotic goal and Balogun misses

  /  autty

Arsenal have been training at adidas HQ in Germany this week, with this match the precursor to their trip to the United States of America for their pre-season tour.

The intrigue around Kai Havertz is certainly significant from an Arsenal perspective. Signed from Chelsea after what most would describe as a three-year disappointment after the hype that built around the attacker whilst in Germany has still garnered a £65million fee from the Gunners.

Where he will play has been the biggest curiosity and across preseason that answer is hoped to be answered to some degree. Against Nurnberg, we have been provided with some insight into the German international’s potential Arsenal future and where the combinations and partnerships he builds might form.

What was interesting about the line-up despite Havertz not starting was how the midfield was structured. After the sale of Granit Xhaka, seeing who would occupy the position opposite Martin Odegaard was always going to be key.

And that is that. A fitness exercise with some moments of greatness like Bukayo Saka's goal and Lewis-Skelly's pass to Balogun.

The American however missed two huge chances in the second half. But preseason is underway, the season is starting and we'll see you for the next one in the United States.

The kids really showcasing their talents here as Lohkemper's strike is brilliantly blocked by Walters.

He did everything right before shooting. Through on goal, rounds the keeper and all he has to do is cut the shot back into the goal but he's missed it.

Is that the head of a striker that's checked out of his Arsenal future? I really hope not.

Worth pointing out the ball from Lewis-Skelly was unbelievably good.

Great counter from Nurnberg. The ball over the top was a glorious one to Goller, a shame the shot couldn't match it.

Ethan Nwaneri has just pulled off a lovely roulette. That'll make the highlight reel!

Another poor ball, this time Cedric. Trusty has to slide in and block to see the ball go out for an opposition corner.

The header is over the crossbar from Gurleyen.

This time the corner from Cedric is good and the young defender's header is just wide of the right post.

Another heroic effort from Castrop this time but the Nurnberg payer's effort is way over.

Myles Lewis-Skelly and Reuell Walters coming on.

Ben White and Eddie Nketiah coming off.

Way over from Cedric and the delivery is not good enough. Flying well beyond the leap of Havertz.

Very, very lucky once again. Hein cannot collect the ridiculous long-range strike from Loune and the ball deflects off the keeper, back to the striker whose shot hits the bar.

Close again for the home side.

So far, Havertz has not been able to get much on the ball thus far. Far from the debut Jesus gave us a year ago but important to remember this is still only preseason.

Seven players coming on for the home side the freshen up the legs.

Balogun picks up the ball on the right and cuts back for the youngster. His shot though is blocked although it looked to be heading goalwards.

What on Earth...

Karl Hein passes into midfield and as Jorginho tries to touch the ball back it beats Hein and is past the Estonian keeper and is in the back of the net.

The pass really wasn't on and put the Italian under pressure. Really poor and thankfully one for preseason.

Should score. Great feet from the forward Gabriel Jesus and the ball eventually falls to the striker whose left-footed shot hits the post.

Auston Trusty makes his debut, and Ethan Nwaneri is also on.

Fabio Vieira combines with Cedric on the right. The Portuguese full-back, who looked offside, received the ball from his compatriot on the right, cut inside the left-back but fired wide of the post.

A rare chance for the home side to come forward. Hayashi drives down the left but his cross is over the bar.

Leandro Trossard has come off as the highly coveted USMNT striker comes on.

The Brazilian was somehow in behind after a cheeky throw-in. On his weaker side though his left-footed shot is dragged past the keeper.

Quite the contrast to when he smashed in his debut goal here last year.

Well, it is as many predicted. Havertz replaces Trossard in the midfield with the Belgian pushing forward into the front three.

Here we go for the second half.

Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Karl Hein, Cedric Soares, Jorginho and Kieran Tierney are coming on.

Nelson, Saka, Ramsdale, Saliba, Partey and Kiwior coming off.

The fans inside the stadium are making their feelings heard welcoming the new summer signing. Will Mikel Arteta bring on the £65million man.

Outside of Bukayo Saka's brilliant strike, Jakub Kiwior stood out. Beside one loose ball, the Pole has been assured and confident when stepping into midfield fulfil the Zinchenko role.

With the Ukrainian international still out for a couple weeks football.london understands, perhaps Kiwior has a chance to lock down the position.

Here are the player ratings for the first 45 minutes.

A dominant half from Arsenal which featured a brilliant goal from Bukayo Saka. Kiwior and White standing out in their full-back roles which vary in responsibility and style.

Plenty of changes are expected for the second half.

Another burst forward from Ben White sees another attempted cross but Mathenia collects this one.

The home side try a break and Valentini tries a cross than falls gratefully into the England international's arms.
