Former Barcelona hero Luis Figo returned to Camp Nou as a Real Madrid player, by the time he prepared to take a late corner, emotions had risen to the point where people in the stands were throwing things at him, including plastic bottles, cans, and lighters. Someone even threw the head of a piglet and one of a rooster.

On this day in 2017

Former Real Madrid and Manchester City striker Robinho has been found guilty of rape in a Milanese disco in 2013 and given a nine-year sentence.

On this day in 1996

Senegalese striker Ali Dia made his Premier League debut.

Dia had just recently been signed by Saints manager Graeme Souness, who had learned of the striker during a phone conversation with someone claiming to be Liberian legend, George Weah.

Shortly afterwards, it was revealed that the call to Souness had not been from George Weah, but was actually from Dia's agent and that none of the purported facts stated during the call was accurate. Although Dia himself denied any knowledge regarding the call, the Saints released him from his contract after two weeks.

On this day in 1979

Turkish striker Nihat Kahveci was born. He scored 59 goals for Real Sociedad.

In the round of 16 match of Euro 2008 Group A, Nihat scored twice in a pivotal match against the Czech Republic. the Czechs took a 2–0 lead through a Jan Koller header and a Jaroslav Plašil goal and the score remained 2–0 until the 75th minute, when Arda Turan scored making it 2–1. Nihat's first goal came in the 87th minute; Hamit Altıntop's cross was dropped by Petr Čech allowing Nihat to tap the ball into the net. He scored his second goal one minute later; a brilliant, curling strike from outside the box, helping Turkey win the match 3–2.
