Despite having Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale on the field together for the first time, Madrid lacked sharpness and were put to the sword by the Argentina international twice inside 33 minutes.
Bale had what would have been a spectacular goal ruled out for handball after a VAR review and Zinedine Zidane's side were punished for failing to register a single shot on target when Thomas Meunier compounded their misery at the culmination of a stoppage-time counter-attack.

Benzema flicks it onto Los Blancos’ number seven, who despite being faced with a crowd of defenders manages to get a wicked shot off. It has plenty of power and Navas would have been beaten, but the effort flashed just wide.

Gueye drove infield from the right, keeping his cool to find Di Maria. The winger had plenty to do, but made no mistake with a powerful, dipping strike which nestled into the bottom-right corner.

The Madrid forward manages to take a bobbling ball under his spell, before lofting a wonderful finish over Navas! But Bale controlled the ball using his arm, before finishing in style.

Bale looked likely to leave Madrid in the last transfer window, but he has started this season in fine form and looks the man most likely to get Los Blancos back into this one. He combines with Benzema to get a shot off from around 20 yards out, though drags it just wide.

Madrid thought they had pulled one back. Benzema slammed home from a tight angle, but the linesman’s flag was up. Vazquez was offside, though he was not clearly involved in the play. However, after a check with VAR, the decision stands.

Meunier starts it off, racing forward and combining with Di Maria before laying it off to Bernat, who had charged up in support. The Spaniard dummies to shoot but instead returns the favour and, in composed fashion, Meunier slots home to make it 3-0!
