Chelsea have one of the brightest young talents in the world in Reece James, but the right-back has missed plenty of football in recent years with the Blues looking to solve that problem
Pochettino is also facing some issues within his current squad that he must resolve and deciding who to take on tour is certainly one of them. Some participants of the senior team are set to return right before the tour kicks of following their participation in the Under-21s European championships.
Fixing the fitness levels Frank Lampard raised concerns over and avoiding the injury issues that plagued the Blues last season are sure to be near the very top of Pochettino's priority list. The Argentine's assistant Jesus Perez will work closely with the medical staff in west London to ensure the Chelsea players are in peak condition.
One player Pochettino will want to be fit for the majority of the campaign is Reece James. The explosive full-back endured a challenging season with multiple injuries seeing him make just 16 Premier League appearances with 21 games in all competitions missed through injury.
The 23-year-old has already proven he is one of the best footballers in the world when at his very best and Pochettino is sure to be keen he can rediscover that form. However, if the worst does happen and significant injuries do strike, the perfect plan B is already in place.
Malo Gusto was signed by Chelsea in the January transfer window in a £26.3million deal from Lyon before being loaned back to the French club for the remainder of the season. Injuries did strike the 20-year-old once he returned but he has since arrived at Cobham and undertaken several training sessions under Pochettino as he looks to compete with James for the right-back spot.
Ahead of the new season, James has sent a clear message to Chelsea supporters. On Instagram, James posted a photo with the caption, "the best of me is yet to come."
In the hope of building those crucial fitness levels that Pochettino will want to be at the highest level possible, the new Blues head coach oversaw a Gacon test. The regular Pochettino training exercise sees participants run for 45 before a 15 second rest, with the running distance incrementally increasing.
According to the Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, Ben Chilwell was one of the top performers. Like James, injuries have also plagued Chilwell, but his fellow full-back looks to have made a statement of intent as he challenges for the left-back position with Marc Cucurella.
