Roma boss Jose Mourinho 'still holding out hope that Granit Xhaka will sign' before window closes

Jose Mourinho is still hopeful of bringing Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka to Roma before the end of the January transfer window, according to reports.

A deal to bring the Switzerland international to the Italian capital in the summer collapsed but Mourinho has not given up on the midfielder.

Having agreed personal terms with the 29-year-old but the deal failing to materialise due to a breakdown in talks between the clubs, reports in Italy state Roma are still hopeful a deal can transpire.

However, both Corriere dello Sport and La Gazzetta dello Sport state that while Mourinho does want to welcome the playmaker to the Stadio Olimpico before this window closes, a player will have to depart first.

The most likely is midfielder Amadou Diawara, who has already rejected a move to Valencia.

The ex-Napoli man earns £1.8m a year so finding a club who can match his salary expectations is difficult.

Arsenal, meanwhile, value Xhaka at £16.6m with Roma considering an offer in instalments in order to land their man.

The Gunners are also being linked with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, so Mikel Arteta's reluctance to sell may be eased if they land the Portugal international.

Xhaka has struggled for form this season, being sent-off twice and missing three months due to injury.

The January transfer window closes this Monday, January 31.
