A revamped Roma suffered a surprise 2-1 friendly defeat to Serie B outfit Benevento, with Roberto Insigne on target.

The Giallorossi were missing 13 players on international duty, while Daniele De Rossi was rested, but they could still count on Javier Pastore, Federico Fazio and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Riccardo Improta had a goal disallowed for offside, but Benevento did eventually take the lead after the restart with Insigne – the younger brother of Napoli star Lorenzo – pouncing on the rebound from Raul Asencio’s parried effort.

Rick Karsdorp went off injured after a knock to the ribs.

Asencio made it 2-0, as again Daniel Fuzato only parried a Cristian Bonaiuto strike into the path of another Benevento player.

Roma got a consolation goal moments later, El Shaarawy’s solo attempt charged down for youth team player Flavio Bucri to tap in, but it won’t calm the tension around a side that has struggled so far this season.

Roma: Fuzato (Greco 90); Karsdorp (Bucri 64), Juan Jesus, Marcano, Santon; Coric (Simonetti 90), Fazio, Pastore (Nigro 80); D’Orazio (Pezzella 46), Celar (Cangiano 57), El Shaarawy
