Rossoneri playing teams from the grand Duchy

Let's take a look at the three times we played Luxembourguese sides in European competitions

6-0 after the first 45 minutes: this should say it all. After all, in the Sixties and Seventies, winning the Luxembouruese championship meant qualifying for the European Cup group stages without the entry barrier of the preliminary rounds or the playoffs. That's why, before Ipswich Town, Galatasaray, Dundee and Benfica, AC Milan draw U.S.

Luxembourg (which then merged with two other clubs to become today's RFCU Luxembourg) on the road to the final in Webley. The Rossoneri won 8-0 in the first leg at the San Siro and 6-0 at the Achille Hammerel, and those games made José Altafini's fortune. Everyone remembers the Brazilian as the 1962-63 European Cup top-scorer with 14 goals: 8 against the Luxembourg side, four in the quarterfinals against the Turkish side Galatasaray and two more in the final against Benfica.

AVENIR BEGGEN: ALMOST IN 50,000 AT THE SAN SIRO

It was the news that made the headlines: more than 46,000 Rossoneri filled the San Siro stands for a game that had a predictable outcome. Reigning European champions AC Milan were back to play in the following edition of the European Cup facing the Luxembourguese side Avenir Beggen - the club founded in 1915 in a district of the Capital - in the first round. The press would criticise Nereo Rocco's team for playing a conservative game after taking the lead in the 15th minute through Pierino Prati and waited until deep in the second half to score the second goal. 5-0 on aggregate, with three more goals scored by the Rossoneri in the away match at the Henri Dunant stadium.

DIFFERDANGE: AC MILAN FOR MUNICH

Only three days after the 192 Munich Olympics massacre of Israeli's athletes, the Rossoneri were back in action. A heartfelt minute's silence preceded the Cup Winners' Cup game vs Red Boys, a local team from a small industrial town in the south-west side of the Grand Duchy. "AC Milan, it's a walk in the park" was the next day's headline in the papers following the 4-1 away win for il Diavolo. The reporters from the Stade du Thillenberg were surprised by the 450 gendarmes deployed for the match, basically the whole Luxembourguese army at the time. The return match at the San Siro saw the Rossoneri win 3-0 through a brace from Chiarugi and one from Romeo Benetti.
