The 16 teams that will play in the Olympic Games must submit their prelist by March 6 and, in light of this, Spain have decided to call up all eligible players.
Regardless of whether they are playing in LaLiga Santander, LaLiga SmartBank, B teams or outside of Spain, La Roja coach Luis de la Fuente's prelist contains more than 300 players.
With the Sergio Ramos debate on the table, following the Real Madrid captain's declaration that he wants to play at the Olympics, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have opted not to leave anyone out.
Therefore, the prelist contains names such as Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Koke, Saul Niguez, Thiago Alcantara, David de Gea, Joaquin Sanchez and many more.
The plan is the same
FIFA's regulations for the Games state that only three players born before January 1, 1997, can be Olympians in Japan.
That means that of the 23 players who secured Spain's place at the Olympics by winning the European Under-21 Championship, there are nine players eligible for those three spots: Pablo Fornals, Fabian Ruiz, Dani Ceballos, Mikel Merino, Alfonso Pedraza, Martin Aguirregabiria, Antonio Sivera, Junior Firpo and Marc Roca.
De la Fuente wants to keep that team intact, though there are some essential players for him in that group, such as Fabian and Ceballos (both of whom could also play at the European Championship with the senior squad), as well as Fornals.
The RFEF's policy has always been to reward those players who helped earn Spain's participation at the Games.
In 2012, the three biggest players were Javi Martinez, Juan Mata and Adrian Lopez, all of whom participated at the 2011 European Under-21 Championship in Denmark.
Therefore, the team that sealed Spain's spot at the Olympics was respected, which meant that Busquets' request to participate at the London Games was declined.
A similar line will be followed this year, but it is necessary to wait for the season to come to its conclusion and see what the Spanish national team looks like ahead of Euro 2020.
But, if they can, those three spots for over-23 players are reserved for those who became champions in Italy last summer.
The RFEF have already begun the task of asking for passports from the players who are most likely to go to the Games.
In the instance that Spain reach the final of the European Championship, the players who may feature in both Euro 2020 and the Olympics would have just over a week between the conclusion of the former and the start of the latter.
And then there will be, in the case of Ramos and others, whatever their clubs have to say.
In France, Paris Saint-Germain have already said no to Kylian Mbappe's Olympic dream.
