Lauriente was about to sign a five-year contract and he was all set to move for €20m.
But at the last minute, the transfer fell through. According to Sky Sports, Sunderland decided to end talks after failing to finalise the details of the deal.
The Frenchman had traveled to Portugal yesterday to join Sunderland for pre-season and was due to sign his contract there this weekend. But everything was canceled and the 26-year-old Frenchman is now returning to Sassuolo.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are also eyeing Lille fullback Bafodé Diakité, who is available for €40m.
