Match Report

The Bianconeri were coming off back-to-back wins over Lazio in the Coppa Italia and Fiorentina in Serie A, but Arkadiusz Milik was still injured. Toro saw their European ambitions take a hit with the 3-2 defeat at Empoli, with Koffi Djidji, Gvidas Gineitis, Pietro Pellegrini and Perr Schuurs on the treatment table.

The Granata’s last victory in the Derby della Mole was in April 2015, followed by four draws from 19 competitive meetings going into this match.

Dusan Vlahovic should’ve opened the scoring after seven minutes when Federico Chiesa rolled across from the right, but incredibly fired it against the far post from close range relatively undisturbed.

Manuel Locatelli also turned over from a promising position, while Federico Gatti was furious at Duvan Zapata striking him in the stomach during an off the ball tussle.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic used his trailing leg to parry the Vlahovic tap-in at the back post after Gatti’s cross went past a Weston McKennie diving header, while Nikola Vlasic nodded a Raoul Bellanova cross off target.

Duvan Zapata had the ball in the net straight after the restart, but the referee had already blown the whistle for a Bellanova push on Filip Kostic.

Gatti got in the way of the Vlasic attempted volley and Samuele Ricci’s effort was deflected wide, then Wojciech Szczesny had to get down to palm a glancing Antonio Sanabria header off the line.

Vlahovic’s curler and a Mergim Vojvoda half-volley were straight into the arms of the goalkeepers, while Milinkovic-Savic had to get down quickly for a tough one-handed save on the Kenan Yildiz angled drive.

Szczesny pushed a corner off the head of Adam Masina and the Toro man landed on him, leaving the goalkeeper with a bloody nose and prompting seven minutes of stoppages.

Torino should’ve won it in added time when Karol Linetty floated a cross to the back post, but Valentino Lazaro nodded over relatively unmarked.
