Tottenham’s view on their signing of Cristian Romero revealed

Cristian Romero signs for Tottenham

Tottenham had a fairly active summer transfer window, which saw six first-team players brought in.

The most expensive of these was Argentina centre-back, Cristian Romero, who is believed to have set the north London-based outfit back £42.5m.

Romero had previously impressed with Atalanta, earning the Serie A MVP defender award for the 2020/21 season:

Since his switch to Tottenham, Romero, in part due to quarantine issues, has not been able to cement himself as the club’s no.1 centre-back just yet.

Tottenham’s view on Romero signing

Romero has started in Tottenham’s last two league matches. But despite winning both ties, Romero is yet to help Spurs keep a clean sheet in the league.

He did come on for one minute at the end of the Manchester City game on the opening weekend, but he cannot really be given credit for that clean sheet.

So, with Spurs’ defence still looking slightly insecure with Romero involved, Tottenham fans may be forgiven for thinking that the club are not overly happy with their decision to sign Romero.

However, speaking on the latest episode of his Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano states that Tottenham think they have signed a top centre-back and are convinced that Romero is one for the present and future:

“In Tottenham they’re really thinking they signed a top centre-back. They wanted him strongly with many opportunities on the market. They had a chance of signing Tomiyasu, of signing Milinkovic of signing Zouma, they wanted Cristian Romero, Fabio Paratici wanted him.

“He’s performing great also with Argentina. With Argentina he’s doing great, Argentina are flying with Lionel Scaloni as manager and Romero is one of the best centre-backs in South America.

“And in Tottenham they are convinced they have a centre-back for present and future, so they’re really excited with this signing.”
