Virgil van Dijk was spotted consoling his Dutch team-mate Denzel Dumfries as Mo Salah stuck the knife into Inter Milan with Liverpool's second goal on Wednesday night.
The dominant centre-back, who put in a commanding display, was seen in the background of replays of the goal.
As the other Liverpool players ran towards Salah to celebrate effectively killing off the tie, Van Dijk stayed with his compatriot.
He had his arms around Dumfries and fans joked that he was telling the defender it was 'game over'.
One wrote: 'I think he was trying to cheer him up', while another posted that Van Dijk was saying "come on bro, it's Mo Salah".'
A third simply posted: 'Sorry bro, the game is over'.
Liverpool had to soak up plenty of pressure from the Italian champions in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
But Roberto Firmino came off the bench to convert Andy Robertson's corner with a glancing header.
Salah then doubled the advantage with a deflected effort minutes later to give Inter a mountain to climb when they visit Anfield for the return leg next month.
