Giampiero Ventura concedes his debut 5-1 home defeat on the Chievo bench was “over after five minutes” against rampant Atalanta.

The former Italy boss was back in business for the first time since losing the World Cup play-off to Sweden in November 2017.

“It’s a game we can’t even comment on, because it was clear after five minutes that we were getting nothing out of it,” Ventura told Sky Sport Italia.

“We wanted to play, but lacked the character and calm to complete even the most basic of passes. Over the last six days, I worked mainly on the style of football, tactics and movements, but I realise now that it was a mistake.

“This team is not capable right now of focusing on these elements. We’ve got to get back to basics and work on determination, concentration and commitment, not to mention find fitness levels that are worthy of a Serie A side, because some players were tired after 30 minutes.

“We need many changes and we’ve got to start from tomorrow.”
