Sevilla are out of danger. After a poor start to the season, they have now climbed out of the bottom half of the table and are now mid-table. Currently, in 10th place, Mendilibar's side have 47 points from 34 games played, but are just one point off the places that give them access to European competition.
The great month of April that they have completed, taking 13 points from a possible 15, has allowed them to reach the last few weeks of the campaign in the fight for seventh place.
In the Europa League, they are already in the final. They will face Jose Mourinho's Roma in the big match in Budapest. The 'Mendi' team conceded a harsh equaliser in the last minute of the first leg against Juventus (1-1). In the return leg at the Sanchez Pizjuan, Suso equalised Vlahovic's goal in normal time and Lamela killed off the tie in extra time (2-1).
In Budapest on 31 May, they will play for a place in the Champions League 2023/24 against Mourinho's Roma, who beat Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen in the other semi-final.
In that scenario, in which Sevilla manage to sneak into the next edition of the Champions League as Europa League champions but finish lower than seventh, many question what will happen to the Spanish teams' places in Europe.
German side Frankfurt won the Europa League last season, but finished the Bundesliga in 11th position, although thanks to their success in Europe, knocking Barcelona out en route, they took part in this year's Champions League. In fact, they made it all the way to the last 16, where they lost to Napoli.
They earned their ticket to Europe's biggest club competition by beating Glasgow Rangers in the final of last season's Europa League. Interestingly, it was played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. Their qualification did not affect the other qualified teams in the German domestic competition.
Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig also participated in the Champions League (the maximum number of participants allowed by UEFA per country is five). Union Berlin and Freiburg played in the Europa League and Cologne, who finished seventh, in the Conference League.
In Spain, it would be exactly the same. If Sevilla fail to make the top seven and qualify for the Champions League via the Europa League, it would not affect those above them in any way. The top four in LaLiga would also be in the next edition of Europe's biggest club competition, with fifth and sixth going to the Europa League and seventh to the Conference League. Nor would it change the reality for the eighth-placed side, even if Mendilibar's side are ahead of them in the table. They would not play in European competition.
On the other hand, if Sevilla win the Europa League and make it into the top seven, Spain would lose their place in the Conference League. There would be five Spanish teams in the Champions League and two in the Europa League, as happened two years ago when Villarreal won the Europa League against Manchester United.
