Inter Milan will play their seventh Champions League final this Saturday, 31 May, in a way they never have before: in their yellow third kit. Wearing the iconic black and blue was off the table, because PSG are the designated “home” team and will wear their blue home kit. But rather than going with their white away kit the Italian club have opted to wear their yellow third kit.
Inter Milan players make jersey choice for the Champions League final
With black details inspired by Milanese architecture, the yellow shirt was chosen by the players for a very specific reason.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, it all came down to superstition. Their only Champions League defeat this season came while wearing white, against Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen in December. In yellow, on the other hand, they’ve picked up two European wins—against Sparta Prague and Feyenoord—plus five more in the Champions League. Goalkeeper Sommer also wore it in the historic 4–3 win over Barça at San Siro.
There’s reason for Inter fans to believe in finals without the nerazzurra. In 1998, wearing grey and black, a Ronaldo-led Inter lifted the UEFA Cup with a 3–0 win over Lazio. That kit, however, was worn in all of their home games in the competition. White has had its moment too: in the 1965 European Cup final against Benfica, they won 1–0 thanks to a goal from Jair.
