From 2014 to 2020... Carvajal's major tournament curse at Spain National Team

Dani Carvajal has played a big part in Real Madrid's success over recent years, winning four Champions League titles.

However, when it comes to preparing for a major tournament with Spain, he's not had much luck.

The right-back made his international debut against France in September 2014 and has only made it to one major tournament before or since.

World Cup 2014: In the mix until the last minute

Carvajal and Juanfran were the two starting right-backs in the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Lisbon, with both picking up injuries.

Carvajal didn't go on holiday to try to be fit in time to make the plane to Brazil, but Vicentre del Bosque opted for Juanfran instead, even though he was playing through the pain.

Cesar Azpilicueta was first choice at the finals, with Juanfran only playing against Australia.

Euro 2016: Injury in Milan

After 50 minutes of another Champions League final against Atletico, this time in Milan, Carvajal suffered a muscle injury that would rule him out of Euro 2016.

Hector Bellerin was selected instead for the tournament in France.

World Cup 2018: The nightmare continues

Carvajal was in tears as he was forced off in another Champions League final, this time against Liverpool in Kiev, because of injury.

However, Julen Lopetegui decided to include the Real Madrid defender in his final squad to travel to Russia alongside Nacho and Alvaro Odriozola.

Carvajal started against both Iran and Morocco in the group stages before coming on as a substitute in the last 16 defeat to Russia.

Euro 2020: Another year to wait

Luis Enrique's return as Spain boss was good news for Carvajal, who played at right-back for the highlights of the coach's first spell in charge at Wembley and against Croatia.

Now, he faces competition against Jesus Navas, Sergi Roberto, Jonny Otto and Azpilicueta to make the final 23-man squad for the postponed European Championship in 2021.
