Cruyff, Koeman, Kluivert... 8 Dutch greats whom De Jong to follow at Barcelona

  /  HollowPoett

Frenkie de Jong hopes to join the likes of Johan Cruyff, Ronald Koeman and Patrick Kluivert as Dutch players who have found success at Barcelona.

Frenkie de Jong has followed in the footsteps of a pantheon of Dutch legends when he joins Barcelona from Ajax.

The much sought-after 21-year-old midfielder ends speculation on his future by agreeing to join LaLiga's champions on a five-year-deal from July in a move that could eventually rise to €86m.

De Jong will get to develop his burgeoning talent at a club that goes hand-in-hand with Dutch greats, with 19 previous players from the Netherlands having represented Barca.

Below we take a look at the eight greatest Dutchmen to don Barca's famous colours.

Johan Cruyff

It is impossible to start this list in any other than with the legendary Johan Cruyff, a man so synonymous with Barcelona.

Like De Jong, Cruyff joined from Ajax, winning LaLiga and the Copa del Rey during a five-year playing stint.

The graceful forward would return to Camp Nou as head coach, winning four LaLiga titles, a Copa, a Cup Winners' Cup and a European Cup with his "Total Football" style in a golden era for the club.

Ronald Koeman

'Tintin' Koeman will always get a mention in FC Barcelona history for scoring the goal that handed Barca victory in the 1992 European Cup at Wembley.

He will also always be remembered for being one of the most reliable penalty takers the sport has ever known, for his free-kick abilities, and for the record breaking power he could put behind the ball.

He scored 106 goals in his six years at Barca, an incredible tally for a defensive player.

In fact, he is the defender with most goals in the Club's history.

Off the pitch, he was popular for his pleasant, down to earth nature, and he became one of the undisputed club idols of the era.

He was part of the club's coaching staff from July 1998 to December 1999.

Patrick Kluivert

As a Blaugrana he scored 145 goals in 308 matches, making him one of the top scorers in the Club's history.

He was described by coach Louis van Gaal as the 'perfect striker', a good summation of an extraordinary forward who stood out for his agility and vision.

He was excellent with his back to goal also, a talent that allowed to create as well as score goals.

In fact, he was more of a creative midfielder who played as a striker than anything else.

Kluivert loved to drop deep and link up with his team-mates as well as being an excellent finisher.

Technically and physically he was a complete player who spent six seasons as a Blaugrana before leaving for Newscastle United in 2004.

Johan Neeskens

Despite having to be a substitute for Peruvian forward Hugo 'Cholo' Sotil, who was very popular with the fans, Neeskens soon won over the crowd with his midfield performances.

Neekens was a classic player who had an impressive physique combined with absolute commitment.

Famous for his impetuous headers and his penalty kicks; regarded as authentic canons.

His devotion was appreciated by the crowd, which made their thoughts clear on many occasions by shouting 'Neeskens, Neeskens', which was heard even after he had left the club.

Frank de Boer

An uncompromising and classy defender, Frank de Boer arrived at Barcelona in January 1999 having previously won the Champions League as part of the legendary 1994-95 Ajax team that also included fellow Barca alumnus Michael Reiziger, Davids, Marc Overmars, Winston Bogarde, Kluivert and twin brother Ronald and coached by Van Gaal – the man who brought him to Barca.

He made 112 appearances for his country and featured just shy of 150 times in LaLiga for Barca, who he won a league title with.

Phillip Cocu

Phillip Cocu had the pleasure of forming a midfield three with Pep Guardiola and Luis Figo upon his arrival into the team, and then was joined by Xavi once Pep had moved on.

Unlike many of the other Dutchman who left or were eased out when Van Gaal left, Cocu stayed on and was made vice-captain when Van Gaal returned in 2002.

He scored the first goal of the Frank Rijkaard era in 2003 and was captain for much of his last season at the club.

Cocu holds the record for appearances for Barca by a foreign player with 292 overall.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Giovanni van Bronckhorst initially joined the club on loan, but his appearances were so impressive that there was never a doubt that his move from Arsenal would be made permanent.

He played a full part in Barcelona winning back-to-back La Liga titles, and was the only player to participate in every match en route to a third Champions League title in 2006, defeating his old club in the final.

He was the scorer of some wonderful long-range goals, and his fitness in being able to incessantly shuttle back and forth down the left side endeared him to the Barca faithful.

Michael Reiziger

Reiziger was a fixture at right back during his tenure at the club in the late 1990s and early 2000s and was consistently good.

Never outstanding, he did, nevertheless, feature heavily for the Catalans despite not being an undisputed starter in his position.

A model professional, he was perfect for the role in which he was bought, and what he did, he did well.
