HOT OR NOT: Wayne Rooney's American form shows how poor MLS is

  /  autty

It's Hot or Not time again as Sportsmail's IAN LADYMAN reveals what's been making him feel warm and what's been leaving him cold this week.

HOT

WAYNE ROONEY

It was always likely Rooney would put everything in to life at Washington DC and he has now scored 10 goals in 17 MLS matches.

But Rooney's form tells us much about the poor standard of the league.

Soccer in the States has not improved greatly and remains the perfect place for any European player looking to end a career feeling good about himself.

SHAUN WANE

The rugby union autumn internationals are almost here and soon Scotland will have a new defence coach.

Wane will arrive from rugby league where his belligerent Wigan have just won their third Super League title in six years.

Wigan conceded just eight tries in their final 10 games in what remains a relatively free-scoring sport. It seems like Scotland have chosen the right man.

EDDIE PEPPERELL

It was great to see a young British talent win a great British tournament on a great British golf course and it clearly meant the world to him to triumph at the British Masters.

Pepperell has thrived on existing on the edges of the mainstream in recent times (have a look at his Twitter) and it will be fascinating to see how he copes now he has proved he is just as good as the rest.

NOT

FREDDIE BURNS

The Bath fly-half endured a horror moment as the ball was knocked from his hand as he prepared to celebrate what would have been a winning try against Toulouse.

But frankly we have seen many get away with much greater extravagance. Credit instead should go to Toulouse winger Maxime Medard who refused to give up and prevented the score.

WEMBLEY

The real scandal of our national stadium is how much it cost to build (just shy of £1bn), where it is (the middle of nowhere) and what it is used for (everything it can be in a bid to get some kind of value for money).

The fact Shahid Khan has not bought it is less important than any of the above.

USAIN BOLT

There has long been suspicion about drug testing policies in Jamaican athletics so to hear Bolt complaining about being asked to take one during his trial spell in the Australian A-League is not a good look.

Bolt has never failed a drugs test in his life and that is all the more reason to carry on rolling up his sleeve whenever asked.
