At Castel di Sangro, Napoli proved to be a 'work in progress', once again failing to secure victory.
In their fourth summer friendly, the Azzurri could not do better than a 1-1 draw with Casertana , a team from Group C of Serie C, overcoming the temporary advantage for the rossoblù scored by Vano thanks to a Matteo Politano already in championship form.
Conte, who was on the bench a few hours ago to lead his side through Sunday afternoon's 2-1 defeat against Brest, rotated his players compared to those deployed against the French side: Meret in goal after recovering from a hand injury, the youngsters Obaretin and D'Angelo in defense, with Mazzocchi in an unfamiliar role at center back, Hasa still in the playmaker role flanked by Anguissa and Coli Saco, and the Politano-Lukaku-Sgarbi trident up front.
A lively first half, with the Falcons well organized by Coppitelli, who broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a header from Vano—left all alone in the box following a corner—that left Meret with no chance. The Neapolitan response, as mentioned, came from Politano, who slipped between Deli and Falasca and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot under the crossbar.
The biggest news for Napoli in the second half was the return of Gilmour and McTominay: the Scots, between Dimaro and Abruzzo, had been working intermittently due to injury issues, and were thrown into the fray against Casertana in the 61st minute. The former United player, along with Lang (another of the new substitutes), came close to scoring the winning goal in the closing stages, as the Azzurri besieged the Rossoblu.
The Campania derby ended in a draw, with Conte's team now set to take to the field again on Sunday at 7 pm against Girona.
