Dortmund have missed out on the opportunity to go joint-top with Bayern after being frustrated by rivals Schalke in the Revierderby.
The hosts were denied by the post on the half-hour mark following a defensive mix-up from Hummels and his team-mates, in what was the best chance of the first half.
David Wagner's men had plenty of shots at Dortmund's goal but rarely any troubled goalkeeper Hitz. Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus also struggled to make any meaningful impact as the game petered out to a goalless draw.
