Ashley Young could be axed by Man Utd this summer as part of clearout

Ashley Young could be a shock major casualty of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's summer clear-out — just two months after signing a new deal.

Defender Young's form at Manchester United has dropped off dramatically. Skipper Young is one of the six-figure earners — and insiders have said that he might be nervously looking over his shoulder in the coming weeks.

Boss Solskjaer wants to sign up to six new faces in the next transfer window and although he will get money to spend, some players will have to go.

Young has been at Old Trafford for eight years since he joined from Aston Villa for a fee of around £17m.

The 33-year-old has scored two goals and made two assists for United in 28 league appearances this season.

And the 39-cap England international recently claimed he is "one of the leaders" at Old Trafford.

Responding to criticism after the defeat to Everton, Young said: "I know what the strength is, the characters in the dressing room, the spirit in the team we've got here.

"I know everybody wants to win those games and finish the season in the top four.

"There's going to be a lot of people turn round and say they know the club, but when you're in it day in, day out, they're the ones that really do.

"Everybody is entitled to their opinions but there are so many leaders in this team. I've got the armband, but I'm just one of the leaders."

Manchester United star Ashley Young has been the subject of vile racial abuse from fans.
