Crystal Palace chief leaves door wide open for Guehi to move to Newcastle

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish claims he “wants” to do business with Newcastle amid their ongoing interest in Marc Guehi.

The Magpies were chasing a deal for the England defender all summer but were unable to agree a fee with the Eagles. Their most recent offer for Guehi was in the region of £65m with an additional £5m worth of add-ons.

But Palace rejected that bid and have retained Guehi’s services until at least January. Chairman Steve Parish has since opened up on why a move did not go through - and has not totally ruled out selling Guehi to Newcastle in the future.

"I don't think the window worked out exactly the same format that we thought it would,” he said to Sky Sports. "Maybe we thought at the beginning it'd be more likely that Marc Guehi went and we kept Joachim Andersen.

"We accepted that bid [for Andersen] which then made it very difficult really to sell both of our starting centre-backs in one window.

"That's not to say it wasn't still an outside possibility that we got to the right number but then Chadi Riad got injured. That doesn't look quite as bad as it seems but it still left us very light and really made it impossible for us to consider at that point."

Away from Guehi, Palace let a host of players go. Michael Olise was their headline exit as he made a move to German giants Bayern Munich.

Joachim Andersen moved to Fulham, while Sam Johnstone signed for Wolves in a £10m deal. Forwards Jordan Ayew and Odsonne Edouard were both allowed to join newly-promoted Leicester.

Parish has not ruled out further business in the future - particularly with Newcastle. The 59-year-old added: "We're proud of the fact that Michael Olise's gone to Bayern Munich.

"We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League. So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck."

Palace have endured a tricky season so far under Oliver Glasner. The Eagles have taken just one point from nine at the start of the campaign - that coming in their most recent outing against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They are back in action after the international break as they host newly-promoted Leicester at Selhurst Park.
