Getafe retain aspirations of securing Champions League football after coming so close last year, with Los Azulones moving up to third in the LaLiga Santander table after beating Athletic Club 2-0 in what is their first ever win at the Nuevo San Mames.
Damian Suarez surprisingly got his name on the scoresheet in the 36th minute, getting forward and showing good footwork in the box before firing into the bottom left corner, and grabbed the second and final goal after converting a penalty five minutes after the half-time break.
This is Getafe's third straight win and they have kept clean sheets in all of those victories, while their points tally is now up to 39 points from 22 games, four behind second-placed Barcelona and 10 behind leaders Real Madrid.
However, Jose Bordalas' side could end the weekend fourth if Sevilla beat Alaves in the 18:30 CET kick-off on Sunday.
For Athletic, their winless run continued. The Basques have not won in LaLiga Santander since December 1, when they beat Granada, having drawn five and lost one coming into Sunday's match with Getafe.
Athletic are fortunate that their form in the opening weeks of the season was so strong as, despite this dip, they remain ninth in the table on 31 points.
