Manchester City are ready to offer centre back John Stones a new £170,000-per-week contract.

Stones hugely impressed for England as they reached the World Cup semi-finals this summer and has taken that form into City's opening two games of the Premier League season.

And according to the Sun, City officials want to reward the 24-year-old with new and improved terms, which would make him one of the club's best-paid players.

Stones' current contract is worth £120,000-a-week and it does not run out until the summer of 2022.

However, City are hoping to tie Stones down early as they look to maintain their dominance over English football for years to come.

A City source said: 'We all know about Stones' price at the time but it feels like a snip in the current market.

'His performances at the World Cup reinforced the belief he will go on to become one of the best in the world as he continues to mature.

'He struggled to get in the team at times last year but that was mostly after his hamstring injury that was a problem.

'Stones is delighted how things have turned out for him since and we know he is ready to commit his future here.'

Despite coming back late from the World Cup and having limited time to prepare for the new domestic season, Stones has played the full 90 minutes in City's opening Premier League wins against Arsenal and Huddersfield.
