Ex-Manchester United star Anthony Martial has been offered a record-breaking contract to join Greek giants AEK Athens.
The French striker is still without a club following his exit from Old Trafford. Martial left the Red Devils in the summer following nine years at the end of his contract.
The former Monaco starlet has been linked with a host of moves including lucrative deals in Saudi Arabia and the United States. But it appears that the £44m man has another option - the Greek Super League.
Capital club AEK Athens are reportedly interested in signing Martial for the coming campaign and are apparently willing to break the bank to make it happen. The striker previously bagged £250k per week during his time with United.
And while it has not been detailed what wage would be on offer in Greece, it would be substantial. As per Sport24 via The Sun, AEK would be willing to make Martial the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Former Tottenham star Erik Lamela is currently the club’s highest earner but Martial’s proposed wage would seemingly blow his earnings out of the water. The duo would also be in for an awkward reunion after an infamous incident back in 2020 saw the Frenchman sent off for striking Lamela in Spurs’ 6-1 win at Old Trafford.
AEK's director Panagiotis Kone has been in London over the past few days for talks with Chelsea regarding David Datro Fofana, and will be key in any discussions with Martial. Lille were also reportedly interested in the latter but have ruled out a move.
Speaking to DAZN, Lille president Olivier Letang said: “Contacts with Martial? No. Absolutely none. I’m not in the habit of stockpiling players. We have Jonathan David, Mohamed Bayo, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. That’s already three solutions for one position.”
Martial, 28, made 317 appearances for United during his eight years at Old Trafford after joining from Monaco. He scored 90 goals in that time.
Should he complete a move to Athens, he will not be the first former Premier League star to be tempted to Greece this summer. Former Chelsea and Arsenal winger Willian has also made a similar move by signing for Olympiacos on a free transfer after leaving Fulham.
The Brazilian has reportedly put pen to paper on a one-year deal worth around £100k per week. Willian, 36, had previously turned down a new contract at Craven Cottage.
