Wolfsbrug have officially announced that their honored coach Dieter Hecking returns to the team.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

Dieter Hecking takes over the position of head coach at VfL Wolfsburg and thus succeeds Daniel Bauer. The 61-year-old returns to the sidelines of the Wolves almost ten years after his departure.

EXPERIENCE FOR THE FINAL STRETCH

"Dieter Hecking brings exactly the experience we need in the current situation. He knows the club, the environment, and also the requirements of the Bundesliga very well. We are convinced that he will give the team the necessary stability with his calmness, his expertise, and his clear line to achieve our common goal, to maintain our league status," says VfL sports director Pirmin Schwegler.

VICE CHAMPIONSHIP, DFB CUP AND SUPER CUP

Between 2013 and 2016, Hecking shaped one of the most successful phases in the recent history of VfL. He led the Wolves to second place in the league in the 2014/2015 season, to victory in the DFB Cup against Borussia Dortmund, and shortly thereafter to success in the Supercup against Bayern Munich. Overall, he stood on the sidelines of the Wolves in 165 mandatory matches, making him the coach with the second most matches in the club's history. In doing so, he averaged 1.75 points per match.

“JOIN FORCES TOGETHER”

Dieter Hecking: "Returning to VfL Wolfsburg means a great deal to me. I've experienced an intense and successful period here and know the quality and energy that this club possesses. Now it's important to fully focus on the upcoming tasks and pool all our forces together to stay in the Bundesliga."

LAST STOP IN BOCHUM

After his time with the Grün-Weißen, Hecking worked as head coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger SV. Subsequently, he took on responsibility as sports director at 1. FC Nürnberg and also served as a coach on the sidelines in the meantime. Most recently, he was head coach of VfL Bochum from November 2024 to September 2025.
