Question marks surround James Rodriguez’s future with Club León

James Rodríguez’s start to the 2025 Liga MX Apertura has gone somewhat unnoticed. The Colombian midfielder appeared in Club León’s first three Liga MX matches—where he scored a solitary goal—but has missed the last two due to an injury, the details of which have not been released by the club. Meanwhile, in the 2025 Leagues Cup, he appeared in all three matches and provided one assist, but his team lost every game and was eliminated.

The Colombian midfielder’s future appears to be a mystery with ‘La Fiera’. The number 10’s contract expires on December 31st of this year, and with just over three months left, the Mexican club’s management has yet to inform the player of their desire to renew his contract in order to begin negotiations. The midfielder will wait and see how the weeks go by; however, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of continuing his career at another club.

"So far, they haven’t said anything (about a renewal); there are three or four months left, but I always say that a club has to be above any player, no matter the name. That will be discussed later. If they don’t have the intention of continuing, then I’ll take another path," James Rodríguez said in an interview with Somos Fox.

“To be a champion you have to be good in every way”

James Rodríguez also addressed the challenge of becoming Liga MX champions. The midfielder knows they’ll have to take it one game at a time and hopes things improve as the days go by. León currently sits in tenth place with six points after two wins and three losses.

“To be a champion, you have to be in good shape in every way, both physically and mentally, and the team has to be in good shape. We all know it’s going to be tough, but you have to take it one game at a time,” the Colombian footballer added.
