Werner's £53m RB Leipzig release clause 'doesn't expire until NEXT MONTH'

Timo Werner's £53million release clause 'doesn't expire until next month' but that won't scupper the RB Leipzig striker's move to Chelsea this summer.

It was thought Werner's exit clause was due to end on June 15 but, according to German newspaper Bild, it is actually July 15.

This leaves Chelsea with more time to fend off rivals for the prolific Germany striker but Werner has given the Stamford Bridge club his word he will join.

Liverpool and Manchester City were also in the chase for a striker who has scored 31 goals across all competitions for Leipzig this season.

But Bild report that Werner will sign a five-year contract with Chelsea on a salary just shy of £9million or around £170,000-a-week, which will make him the club's top earner.

It has been reported that Werner's release clause was due to drop to £44m this summer if Leipzig don't win the Bundesliga.

At the weekend, Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said the deal hadn't yet been completed but Chelsea are expected to conclude matters once the window opens.

Frank Lampard's team, currently fourth in the Premier League and on course to qualify for next season's Champions League, are preparing to return to action against Aston Villa on June 21.

Werner, who has scored four goals since the Bundesliga restarted last month, will be in action on Friday night as Leipzig travel to Hoffenheim.

Though Julian Nagelsmann's side haven't lost any of their five games since the restart, three draws at home have ended their chances of beating Bayern Munich to the title.
